What is the objective of this program?

Today’s young cattle producers will be expected to replace the current leadership as the baby boomer generation ages. Leadership must be developed and encouraged.

The business world demands a combination of skills that can be developed through preparation and exposure to many facets of the industry. As experienced leaders face retirement, replacement expertise will be required and must be developed over time to ensure adequate preparation and exposure to many facets of the industry.

This mentorship program benefits participants through exposure to policy, technologies, one-on-one relationship with leaders and a greater understanding of industry issues and opportunities.

What is the time commitment to be a participant?

CYL is not a traditional mentorship program. Participants will find it flexible and tailored to what they want to experience. Without intense time commitment, the mentorship areas give students & producers a chance to team up with influencers in industry, make connections and provide valuable input to industry and government.

Mentors will dedicate a minimum amount of time to activities within a pre-determined time frame to share skills, experiences and opportunities with mentees. In order to complete the program, the candidate will need to exhibit comprehension and proficiency in the areas of learning.

What determines the successful completion of the Professional or Industry Leader Mentorship?

Successful program completion is not based on a set amount of hours but rather evaluated on attendance at key events (minimum of one) and/or a face-to-face visit. The candidate must demonstrate learning in a number of areas set out by the mentor and candidate at the onset of the program.  The final requirement is to submit three mentorship photos and complete a questionnaire with in-depth responses based on the participant’s experience.

What is the duration of a Professional or Industry Leader Mentorship?

The expected duration of the terms will be five to six months. A term begins on January 1st of every year until the end of June, followed by the second term commencing July 1st and ending on December 31st.  This is a three year project that will hopefully gain enough interest and funding to continue well into the future.
