Welcome to the Cattlemen's Young Leaders

The Cattlemen’s Young Leaders (CYL) Development Program provides industry-specific training and mentorship to assist the Beef industry into the future.

This program provides a combination of formal and informal opportunities to learn from existing beef cattle industry leaders and other youth organizations undertaking mentorship opportunities.

Young producers between the ages of 18 and 35 years have a chance to participate in provincial, national and international high level discussions that define the direction and future of the Canadian cattle & beef industry. Providing participants with a chance to explore a potential career choice or rewarding provincial/national producer organization involvement, while gaining essential business connections and learning tools along the way.

Professional Mentorship

Beef Related Career Choice

This program is most attractive to pre, post and current college and university students who have a keen interest in a beef related profession.

The Professional Mentorship program gives candidates the opportunity to pair up with agriculture professionals to get a jump-start on the careers of their choice.

Industry Leader Mentorship

Making Leadership Connections

This program is tailored to active producers who exhibit leadership potential. Beef producers are matched with an appropriate Industry representative based on interests in areas such as animal health, international trade, international and domestic marketing, environment, research, advocacy, and policy development.

International Mentorship

Making Leadership Connections

Once a participant has successfully completed the Professional Leader or Industry Leader Mentorship programs, they become a CYL member and qualify to apply for several international trips, including conferences, farm tours, round tables and exchanges.

Alberta Pilot launch July 2010

Six Alberta enthusiasts can select an area of interest; participants can be mentored by a beef related professional (Professional Mentorship Program ; ex. Cattle operator, pharmaceutical rep, veterinarian) or if an existing young cattle operator, participants can mentor with beef industry leaders (Industry Leader Mentorship Program; ABP or CCA board members, Committee Chairs).

Once the pilot phase is complete, feedback from participants will be compiled to complete a strategic plan that will ensure a successful National roll out.
